When is best for a Xmas/New Year bargain?

Mum and I are (hopefully) heading off for a super duper Xmas/New year break somewhere hot and exotic, ideally we'd like to do Cuba but are flexible and happy to go anywhere in the Caribbean but we're wondering when the best time to book is - we both finish work at the close of play on Dec 23rd and we both have until 12th December off so nearly 3 weeks - we'd like to be there for Xmas and new year but it's not essential and we're happy to fly xmas day/boxing day etc.
Expert guide on here says if you can be flexible leave it as late as poss to get the best deals but someone has mentioned to mum that for long haul that's not the case so i'm seeking to clarify that and indeed if we're better leaving it then some help to reasure her

No such thing as a Xmas bargain. Friends when to Maldives, last second booking with big price markdowns compared to the normal Xmas price for Maldives. Was still more than twice the normal price at any other time of the year.
You either need to book c12 months in advance to get the early bird discounts and sales or book very last second and accept theres limited choice. Either way itll still be an inflated price
Flying Xmas eve/day is normally cheaper but still not cheap0 -
It has cost me a fortune for flights and they are still going up.
And I am only going to Lanzarote !0 -
Gosh that's a long holiday from 23 Dec - 12 December!
It's always going to be expensive at that time of year but just in case there is a bargain, check morning noon & night from now until then. You never know your luck.0 -

Lanzarote (and the rest of the Canaries) is probably one of the most popular destinations at Xmas an New Year as it's the closest place that will have guaranteed hot weather. Anywhere around the Med will be more risky.
Bargains at that time of year are as rare as hen's teeth as it is an increasingly popular time to go away. One possibility would be to look at non-obvious destinations which are more of a business route and may be cheaper over the holidays - though that will typically rule out the "hot and exotic" places.
I normally go to southern Spain but I'm trying Cyprus for a change this year.0 -
The 'rich' go to the Caribbean for Christmas and New Year for a reason, the rest of us can't afford it. The chances of cheap flights or accommodation at that time of the year are either 'slim' or 'non existent' It may be cheaper to fly on Boxing Day but the accommodation will still be expensive0

Look at flight and hotel leaving on 25th Dec and consider Carribean Mexico and South Florida.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

I feel i should point out i'm not looking for a cheap as chips holiday, i realise it's an expensive time of year to go away - mum turned 60 this year and is using part of her pension, i've taken on extra hours in my main job and a second job working weekends in a cafe to pay for it all so i'm simply looking to get the best value for money we possibly can and wondered if anyone knows if there's a set time that travel agents tend to have sales on???? I don't go on holiday regularly (once in the last decade) so am a bit clueless on such things.
I'm not looking to be on holiday for nearly 3 weeks i was just trying to demonstrate that we have a reasonable amount of flexibility in terms of availability and destination - MSE guide states to leave it as late as possible in that instance but i just want an idea of whether that's the same for long haul as it is for Europe as mum has heard conflicting advice.0 -
