This is what sometimes confuses me - yes, I deal with complex equations fine but normal common-sense things like this sometimes get me:

I wonder if maybe some of our 'experts' on food decay can help out here (or anyone else). I have a product that I'd forgotten I'd got - in fact a packet of the S/P Peanuts. Now, it says "Best before 26/07/2014", which is fine (I assume) as it's 'just' a best before date.

However, they also say "Once opened, consume within 3 days." That reads to me like an instruction there - or maybe even an order. No polite "pleases" or "thank yous" at all - it doesn't say "...please consume within 3 days" for example - so there I am, again, being ordered and bossed around by food packaging all the time:rotfl:. (But I digress...)

Does the "3 days" still apply if the packet is first opened after the BB date? Or should they be consumed "immediately" (or reasonably immediately - I realise they don't suddenly become inedible seconds after being exposed to the air!) on opening if the BB date has already gone?

Maybe I ought to be writing to Mr A to ask them what they mean, as it's what they've written. However, thought I'd ask on here - don't want those nuts to go to waste of course:money:.

Or should we ignore the "consume within 3 days" completely as, if it's before "best before" date it's still fine well after that date, even if opened, as BB is merely about quality and nothing to do with food safety, and even if outside the BB date, it's still just a quality issue based on the manufacturer's own opinion and, again, not an issue of food safety (and with these nuts having reasonably long to go to the BB at the time of their purchase, still reasonably okay for longer after it, as a rule of thumb)?

Please ignore the rest of the post, as I'm just adding a confusion, in response to me pre-empting an answer. To the above, not the below please!;)
(In which case...why even put the "consume within 3 days" instruction there at all? (That's what gets me but then I suspect I 'operate' in a way that gives meaning to all words, that if a different word should have been used it would have been used, that nothing is superfluous or meaningless at all, otherwise it would not have been included, but I think that's not how most people work and therefore perhaps it is totally superfluous and meaningless as usual?!?:rotfl:))
