left my laptop on all night. Now one of the rubber feet was missing from the corner where the fan intake is (dell inspiron 8600) and it sucked up loads of fluff and chocked the radiator/grill after the fan.I have ordered replacment fan ( because it does not sound right, and hoovered the grill, so at the moment the lappy works until the fan kicks in then goes flakey, has anyone any other suggestions as to what damage i might have caused and how to rectify.
thanks
and yes i should moderate the booze:o

I doubt that 1 night caused the fan to go like it has. The "grill" is called a heatsink all the dust will do is reduce the airflow so clear it out with the hoover and a can of compressed air and see how it goes no need to order a new fan it just needs cleaning out. If the fan is noisy then it is just wearing out as they do. My laptop has been on pretty much 24/7 for 18 month and it has only had 1 new fan in the nearly 3 years I have had it.0

Remove the fan and give everything a good clean - instructions at http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins8500/en/8600cr/sm/fan.htm#10005500

thanks for that, i have cleaned heatsink and fan,but lappy still goes flakey when the fan switches on after 15 minutes or so, is this just self preservation, i.e. tempreture rises, all things grind to a halt ?
I'm thinking the fan is damaged (because of the noise its now making) and this is causing things to heat up.
I was worried that i had fried the chips:eek: but all works fine for 10-15 minutesliving on the "edge"0 -
define flaky? if you mean slow, then it is probably because the cpu is struggling to keep up with whatever you are doing, video etc.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I have now replaced fan,but after 30 minutes of running fine,a blue screen comes up with this message.
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.A process or threadcrucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or terminated

Stop F4 seems to have a few causes the most common is hard drive related.
mainly controler/chanel master or slave on a single channel but a laptop won't have these options so I would run chkdsk /r so see if it has any faluts first.0 -
