So next year OH and I both turn 30
In order to cope with no longer being in our twenties we have decided to give ourselves a joint birthday present in the form of a holiday to New York.
So now I'm really looking for some tips! Has anyone been before? Anyone planning a holiday there at the moment?
What's the best time to visit? We were thinking Sep/Oct time but open to suggestions.
Also looking for recommendations on the area to stay in, or even specific hotels, etc. We're not that bothered about swanky accommodation; as long as the sheets are clean and it's not too noisy we're usually happy enough as we spend most of our time out and about.
In relation to that, are there any day trips that are worth doing from NYC? We're even thinking of travelling on somewhere after New York.
So basically, we're just looking for tips and suggestions to help us get through the sea of information on the city!
Any recommendations welcome.

We did NYC and a road trip around New England/Washington DC which was fantastic! Happy to help with any tips if you need it

New Yorker hotel is usually pretty reasonably priced and isn't bad.0 -
There's the New York thread if you do a bit of a search you should find it.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Yup - this is the thread for anything NYC. The board would probably be clogged without it.

pogofish - Thanks for the link. I did a search before I posted but that thread didn't appear!
Heva - do you know how easy day trips are to do on public transport? Neither OH nor I want to drive on the "wrong side of the road"

In parts of Europe I understand that sentiment but once you get outside of the chaos of NYC then the roads are so damned big it really is a breeze0 -
One option is the Metro North railway line from NYC alongside the Hudson River up to Poughkeepsie. Very scenic once you clear the city.PurpleSkies wrote: »do you know how easy day trips are to do on public transport? Neither OH nor I want to drive on the "wrong side of the road"
Sitting on the left and driving on the right isn't a problem for most people. Driving on multi-lane freeways in big cities with fast heavy moving traffic and the need to change lanes in relatively short distances for navigational reasons can be a problem if you're not used to doing it on British motorways. But outside of the big cities driving in the USA is extremely easy and to a large extent it's the only way to explore the country, especially the national parks. However, a car would be a seriously bad idea in NYC, so maybe a road trip would be better done separately."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0
