Melons...

I'm growing melons for the first time in the greenhouse. I planted them from seed and they've taken really well. I have a vaierty called Charentais (look like canteloupe) and watermelon, sugar baby variety.
So far there are loads of melons coming and 2 or 3 are about 3-4 inches in diameter.
What I need to know is how do I look after them? They are currently on the ground but the pics I've googled show them strung up. I'm not sure that I have room to do this as it's quite a small greenhouse.
I've also got butternut squash coming along. Is there anything I need to do with these as well?
Many thanks

Keep the nets any bought fruit come in, as they work wonders for holding the fruit up off the ground. Any Heath-Robinson way of support helps. The plants can't really support the fruit itself, so a few canes, strings, upturned pots and buckets all help. Try to water the soil, not the stem, watch out for slugs, woodlice, and mice... They love them.0

Are they in the greenhouse? :eek:0 -
My squash are growing up (and over) an eight foot wall; I'm a little concerned my neighbour will get all my produce...

In a greenhouse, I think I'd only approach pitchfork in hand...
Mind you, here in my walled garden, my melons are nearly ripe, and they are outdoors. Had apricots, peach, and grapes for breakfast. Sounds good... but the buzz of the mosquetos right now sounds more like a hairdryer. Is DDT available on Ebay? With a B52 to drop it?0 -

Here, we have more wind to keep the flying insects on their toes, but our Hirundo rustica and Delichon urbicum soon polish them off anyway.
This year, I'm growing my squash in linear beds 4m apart and covering the gap with woven polypropylene. They seem to be liking this. I'm pretty happy with the lack of weeds under them too.

Yes the squash are in the greenhouse, not taking up much room at the moment but the fruit is still tiny. Is this a problem?0

Well, it depends on the size of the greenhouse......
The butternut squash I grow typically need space. 5 or 6m would be the typical 'diameter' of a fruiting plant.0
