Charges for spending on credit card

I recently arrived back from holiday, and took a cab home from the airport. There were notices in the cab saying "Credit cards accepted" and "Save your cash! Pay by credit card!" :rotfl: Nowhere that I saw was there any mention of a charge for doing so.

The meter showed £14.80 when I got home, and the driver pointed this out, and said, "Fourteen pounds eighty." I gave him my credit card, and completed the transaction. When I got indoors I found that the ticket read £16.28.

I phoned the cab company the next morning, and was told that the markup was "bank charges".

:question:The questions: 1) is it legal to impose a charge for paying by credit card? I thought that this had been outlawed in the 80's under Thatcher.
2) If it is legal, is the supplier obliged to warn the customer of the charge before completing the transaction?
3) If the supplier can make such a hidden charge, is it legal for it to be as high as 10%, far exceeding the charge levied by the credit card company?
4) Can I get my money back?

    1) Her government actually changed the rules - before it was illegal to charge more by paying by card.
    2) The charge is legal - you should have been advised - in fact you were on the ticket. If you had read it you could have cancelled the transaction and paid cash.
    3) It can be as high as they want it is up to you to decide whether you are prepared to pay it.
    4) I would not think so. Sue if you like after all that £1.48 must be very important to you.

I'm no expert at all, but arent black cabs (if this was one) only allowed to charge what the meter shows and nothing more?
Have come across this quite often when getting a taxi for a night out in liverpool, many black cabs wont take you as they then have to pay the tunnel toll themselves
