British gas late bill, do we have any rights?

That's not a stance they can take, and if they tried that sort of thing with me they would not be getting a penny. They haven't given the OP 18 months, because the OP wasn't expecting the bill and they had to go back through their accounts to confirm that the bill was in fact due.
Of course the op was expecting the bill, they knew their original supplier was bg, they used them for 3 months and then changed. They would have known their meter readings at start and at change of suppliers and would have been able to calculate a rough cost.
The op does not sound stupid, they simply hoped that bg forgot, same as I would.0 -
We have no "right" to a 3 month payment period, but we can try.they have to allow a period to repay, to which is not place you into difficulty
I think the OP must go very gently in his request to pay the due amount over the course of 3 (or more) months. He might well end up with an "Arrangement to Pay" marker on his credit file.
That marker is surely worth than having to find a (small-ish) amount within four weeks; if need be, by taking something to the pawn brokers.0
