credit card for a housewife - unemployed/never worked

Can my wife apply for a credit card in her name? If yes then which one?

She is a house wife, never employed, she has had a phone contract in her name and a joint current account for several years. Recently the both of us had a mortgage approved in joint names so I am guessing credit history is ok.
What are the chance she will get a credit card approved in her name alone?

Some companies do take into account household income but if thats enough to outweigh nil income....

Why does she need a card in her own name? Why not have her as a secondary cardholder on a card in your name?

Might be worth checking out the Aqua Credit Card. I got that for my wife who had never had a credit card or mortgage etc. But she did work.

She does not really "need" it. I have a couple with good credit limits which she can be added on to but its just that we would like to have one in her name if we can get one so that she has a well maintained credit history for future. We plan to pay full amount each month for this one.

Do you know which company takes into account the household income????

As said above, check out Aqua. From their own website:

    "Credit cards for the unemployed
While many credit card applications set minimum salary requirements that make them out of reach for those without work, there are specific credit cards for the unemployed. If you are self-employed or employed with a fluctuating income, aqua might be able to help you obtain credit. We specialise in assisting people with exceptional circumstances and would be happy to deal with your query."

Try the bank that the joint account is with. My wife is in a similar situation and obtained a credit card with our bank.

My mum recently applied and was instantly accepted for a Tesco Clubcard Credit Card, she classes herself as a Housewife.
