I was given a 500GB SATA 2.5 laptop hard drive that I want to install into my computer to use as a bootable hard drive.
It was replaced by a SSD.
I already have a 2.5 drive to USB cable but I want to use the 2.5 drive as a bootable drive in an old computer (after formatting and installing an OS) that had a hard drive failure.
I used the failing hard drive as an excuse to buy an new computer.:j
What do I need to accomplish this?

If you are putting it in a relativity modern desktop you just need to plug it in.
The connection for SATA are the same for 3.25 and 2.5 drives.
Most modern cases (well in the past 5 years or so) should have screw holes where you can attach a laptop drive inside the case.
If it's a old IDE machine then you'll need a SATA to IDE adapter.
Something like this:

You plug the wide IDE cable in one end of the adapter and plug it into the SATA drive with a power connector and off you go!Laters

To properly fix the hdd inside the case you need either this

or that
