What APN/Profile details did you enter?

If you prefer to have a Connection Manager interface; Download and save this Connection Manager and unzip the contents. Remove the modem and run the Install application. Unzip the contents of the Win8_Modem_Drivers package. Plug the modem in and when the 3 software opens, shut it down(by clicking on the 'x') and double click on the newly installed Join Air Connection Manager to open it. If the modem is not recognised by the Connection Manager, run the ZTEDrvSetup application that is in the Win8_Modem_Drivers package.

I entered "O2" (with 3g bearer), I followed this guide by the way
    http://ask3.three.ie/ROIWebdocs/Changes/Mobile%20Broadband%20Support/Installation%20&%20Connection%20Issues/Creating%20a%20new%20connection%20profile.htm

a pop up window says "the connection attempt failed"

How would I download the connection manager if I am not connected to the Internet in the first place ?

Your router/internet box acts as a hardware firewall, for software windows 8 comes preinstalled with windows defender which actually rated highly just download Malwarebytes too. For added protection.

If you did not add any of the these Profiles(or similar).....

o2 UK (Pay As You Go SIM from a DONGLE)
    APN: m-bb.o2.co.uk
    Username: web
    Password: web

o2 UK (Pay As You Go SIM from a prepaid PHONE)
    APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
    Username: web
    Password: web

    .....it will not work.

As I told you before, use a different Connection Manager to be able to enter the full and correct APN/Profile.

Tried the connection manager last night but Avast blocked part of it, I’ll try again when I have time

I entered the APN suggested in the Profile on the USB window, but still doesn't connect...
  • I once used Norton Anti-Virus but when I did get a virus they said I had to pay to have it removed, I didn't really see the point as I had already purchased the Anti-Virus.

I now use AVG which has a good free version.

I use both Avast and McAfee (both free, McAfee was already in when I purchased the laptop), do you guys reckon I should eliminate one in case they might be an obstacle to each other ?

It is always advised only to use one av product. They can clash and give false positives. I'd remove Mcafee. You can download a free tool to get rid of it all. Try here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/mcafee-consumer-products-removal-tool/
  • The whole virus thing definitely sounds like a Pebcak problem - I use nothing but MSE and the inbuilt firewalls on my Windows machines.
