I am not sure why you found it necessary to post at all. The answer was obvious and you found it out for yourself.

No need to rain on his parade - he's just showing off the fruits of his labours...

Well done OP, nice job ;)

I see 27col is based in the same county as me. I can only deduce that he is a professional gate fitter and, upon seeing the magnificence of my installation, felt his emotions swell through wonder, jealousy and derision, fearful for his wellbeing.

Rest easy, 27col, I haven’t yet felt the calling to move into this sector – I won’t give up the day job just yet.

But just remember that people come here from all walks of life for advice, assurances and guidance – be it for finance, DIY or parenting. What seems obvious and trifling to one man can be the polar opposite to the next.

I was in no way decrying the OP's efforts.
I was just saying that you found the solution yourself and made a good job of it. You did not really need any advice.
The answer to most diy questions is to think logically about what you want to do. There are always more than one way to do any job. I have often found that I change my mind once a job has started, when I see an easier or cheaper way of doing it.
Good luck with any future projects.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    complete and utter rubbish

the original poster said they were going to mount the gate with the hinges on a batten mounted to the fence post and people said not a good idea

the op rethought and came up with what looks like the best option that seems to work, a wooden gate post fixed to the brick work of the house and the gate mounted off this fixed post keeping the mountings away from the fence

they found it necessary to post looking for ideas, why did you find it necessary to post such a stupid response?

Two reasons that I can see.

    1. Other people come on the site and see things that they might be considering doing themselves. It's useful to see what solutions others have come up with, and then followed through on. This can influence how some people will approach such a job. I always appreciate a follow-up post to know if a chosen solution has worked.

    2. Apparently it feeds the trolls.
