I didn't take offence, I was being a little sarcastic about a so called shortage.0

Please don't patronise me. Smug comments such as that do nothing but belittle the ambition of young people. It's not productive and is just downright rude.
It has nothing to do with 'deserving' better. I'm well aware we won't be able to afford much as our first home.
We live in a fairly rural location and flats/maisonettes don't really exist on the market around here. If we were so desperate to purchase one, it would involve having to move further away which would increase our commutes to work and as such wouldn't be practical for our monthly expenditure. We would like to have children in the pretty near future and a flat or maisonette wouldn't be suitable. Little or no outside space and potentially screaming children in close proximity to neighbours to name a couple of reasons.0 -

Plenty of people bring up children in flats so they aren't unsuitable for everyone. Fair enough that you personally don't want a flat or a maisonette, but there's a bit of a difference between need and want.0 -

It's not necessarily through choice, more through a lack of option as I mentioned. I know people live in flats in cities and larger towns, and manage to bring up children perfectly well. I'm not belittling it or saying we deserve better. The option just isn't really available to us where we live.0 -
Its nothing to do with thinking we deserve better, the more we are delayed the more the spec changes.
IE, if I could have afforded anything at 21 a 2 bed terrace would have been fine, as it is the first time I could afford to buy was at 28 so we moved straight to stage 2 and bought a 3 bed semi.
Its not as simple as all FTBs should by a certain type of home, it depends where they are upto in life when they come to buy and as the average age moves up the average FTB home while change with it.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

The spec has also changed as people expect to have a dining room, a spare room, and there's no expectation that children should share. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it does mean that people expect more than many used to.0

Indeed they do, but many flats are also rented.
Buying a flat, and putting all that money into something you don't really want never appears to be a great idea to me. Especially if you know you are going to move again in the near fuure.....a lot of money spent on buying / selling costs.
May aswell save a little longer and spend your money on something more suitable.
IMHO anyway.
If a flat is your ONLY choice going forward, that's a slightly different matter, but that didn't appear to be what the poster was suggesting. The spec has also changed as people expect to have a dining room, a spare room, and there's no expectation that children should share. Not sure who you hang around with, but I've never heard anyone who want's their first house demanding a dining room and spare room. Never heard anyone on here talk about the lack of dining rooms in houses either to be honest.
Seen stuff like that on Location Location Location, but then were talking about people who have the money to spend and are looking for specifics. They are not suggesting they can't buy property in the first place.0 -
