Memorize a route /routes

Thinking of going on the taxis...one thing that i will need to do is sit a test, for the test i will need to know 40 routes ...ie Hotel in one part of the city to a house 5 miles away...you need to answer road by road.......put me in a car and most prob i would get 80% right....the problem i have is when i sit tests my mind seems to go blank.
Any tips to help me memorize the routes ?

The way I've seen black cab drivers do it on telly programmes is they spend hours/day, for weeks (months?) on end going over the route on a bicycle with a map strapped to their handlebars.

Think that is London, they can spend up to 2 years getting to know 25000 streets

It must work though - else they'd sit at home chomping biscuits to memorise them all
