New to this pick an energy supplier
Hi,
This is a bit overwhelming for me, when i left England in 2000 there was very little choice, in N Ireland, all i had to do was ring round oil companies for their price per litre and take it from there.
But I'm just coming to the end of a years tenancy in a house with a pre paid meter to which i was told i couldn't switch, only to just recently find out i could have!! Shame as the house was a fridge anyway..
So i'm moving into my parents old home which is currently on e on, i think. My mother was elderly so she had her allowance and cooked us all when she was living there.
The websites all have comparisons but all i can offer is what i was paying for my energy on a pre pay meter so in effect its what i can afford, where is the website for that option... I don't see any
I'm moving on the 6th August and would appreciate feedback or a point in the right direction of the right supplier as i see loads of comments which don't look good in some respects..

All you need is a postcode and a good enough guess for a starting estimate for your usage in kWh. If you have no idea what your mother used in her home then you can start with the national average and two-thirds of the national average.
Use a comparison site like energyhelpline.com or uswitch.com.
The average is 13,500 kWh gas and 3,200 kWh electricity but if you are by yourself you could also see what 9,000 and 2,500 kWh would cost.
Alternatively, if you don't want to switch straight away, you can ask Eon to put you on their Fixed 1 year V6 tariff - not the cheapest but the early leaving fee is only £5 per fuel. You can then see how much you are using this winter and can choose a new tariff then if necessary.0 -
Now you have me wondering if there is a way i can check my current meter for usage, thing is there aren't any manuals left but i know there are a number of menus on the gas one I will have a look online.. I wouldn't want to be put in the same catagory as my Mum, she is 92 so needed the heat on when it was getting warm bless her. I will look into this further tomorrow and check back for any other advice but thanks for the introduction to this wacky world!
Ps question out there for anyone, from what i saw on a comparison i did make, how come renewable energy costs more when its supposed to be taken from solar and wind power lol. Thats just irish, by now the setting up should have settled in ...0 -

It's one of the great mysteries, however if people are daft enough to pay extra because they think it's green then who are we to criticiseNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Morning Cee,
Thanks Nada666 for the info
The first thing to do is to contact E.ON and let us know you've moved in, make sure you read the meters on the first day you're responsible for the house. We'll need to open an account for you even if you'd like to change supplier.
You can do this by using the form online or by giving us a ring.
If you contact your current supplier, they should be able to help you with your current usage for the year.
You can then use this to pop in to the comparison sites and see who would be best for you and start the change of supply process if you wish.
Hope this helps a little.

OP: Do you have access to any of your mother's old bills? Those could also give you a starting point for estimating (=guessing
) likely consumption.
Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

What you use in your current property is completely irrelevant to your new one. As above, either calculate annual kWh usage based on your mum's old bills (if available), or use UK average kWh figures.
PS: never input ££ monthly into a comp site, always use actual kWh figures if you want accurate results. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I'm concerned using my Mothers average as i said before she is an elderly 90 year old who had the heating on in April to max due to her illness, me? I'm a 48 year old who really needs little heating at the moment lol with exception to cold winter nights and I can be very stingy then, I fear using my mums usage amount will throw me way over what i can afford, remember she got a heating allowance for the elderly, i don't.0
