Problem with our apartment

So me and 6 friends booked an apartment in Playa d'en bossa on Trip Advisor for 10 nights.

When we arrived at the apartment, the owner/manager sat us down and said: "just to let you guys know, what I am doing here, it's not legal, I'm not allowed to rent out this apartment for less than 6 months, so if anyone asks you are here for the season."

Without any other alternative and having already paid for the apartment we had to accept this.

Apart from the apartment being really dirty, it was an good holiday.

However whilst we were there, one of my friends loaded up the fridge with too much food and one of the trays broke (talking about one of the plastic trays that stores food at the bottom of the fridge) We have just been told over the phone that the cost to replace the fridge is 250 euros.. and we are only getting half our damage deposit back.

Obviously this is absolutely ridiculous and I just wanted some advice on what you guys think the best way to go about this is/if there is anything we can do!

Thanks in advance

If you have paperwork regarding the booking of the place I think I would {as a last resort}counter the owner with the treat that unless he returned the deposit {less the damage for the tray} you will be reporting him for breaching the letting rules for his place. OK you might not win but it may scare him enough to think twice about keeping half of the damage deposit back
