About 3 months ago I had all my camera equipment stolen from out of the back of my van.
I made a claim with my insurance company who took about 5 weeks to come back and tell me that it wasn't covered as it was in an unattended vehicle. I checked my T&C's and it is correct that items in an unattended vehicle are not covered.
However, when I took out the policy via Swinton Insurance brokers I explicitly asked if my named items on the policy were covered anywhere in the world. I was told they were. I took out the policy with the thought that my camera equipment (and also my fiance's engagement ring and our two phones) were covered for a loss anywhere.
Now, I know that the policy does not actually cover for loss "anywhere" as it doesn't include a vehicle parked outside my house and it says as much in the T&C - so do I have a case to go to the Ombudsman and who do I complain about... the insurance company (who you can't deal with directly) or the brokers?
As it happens they rang me up to renew my policy last week and I took the opportunity of recording the phone call - the dialogue is:
Me: Are my named items covered for loss anywhere?
Swinton: Yes they are
Me: Absolutely anywhere?
Swinton: Yes they are
Any advice gratefully received, I'm struggling here
