I had one out of a Christmas cracker - in a small plastic case was a bobbin of different coloured lengths of thread (black, white, grey, red and yellow) three sewing needles, and a threader, I kept in my handbag and it was a real godsend!0

it had a keyring attachment, i used it on the keys for my bike lock and jewellery box - being quite young i only had 2 keys - along with about 18 other key rings!! i was horrified when my mother requisitioned it at a family wedding when a button came off an aunties skirt. i would not be so precious now!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0 -
A stapler is quicker and easier for repairing a dropped hem - have done this at work a few times

I know OP asked for advice for putting in her car but just wanted to flag up that sewing kits (well the scissors, pins and needles) must go in hold luggage when flying.0

Double sided sticky tape is quicker than sewing up a dropped hem, and looks better than staples.
I always put together an emergency bag for weddings (really, not that odd when you think about it, honest!!) - sewing kit, spare stockings, sticking plasters, blu tack, pen, post-it notes, suncream. It all goes in a large lime green bag and gets hidden where no-one can see it. You'd be amazed how often it's used.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Invisible thread in dark and light will fix anything! I know I always used to throw out kits when one colour went, now I just keep those reels in the glove box.
