mini sewing kit ideas (for ICE bag in car)

hi

Putting together an In Case of Emergency bag for the car - change clothes, first aid kit, snack, phone etc.

I want to add a mini sewing kit too - in case button flies off trousers, or hem falls down. I have a see-through tupperwear box that clips closed, it currently holds black and white thread, 2 sewing needles, enough safety pins to hold up a couple of hems and a tape measure.

Any ideas?

  • Small pair of scissors.
A few basic buttons for shirts
But think that list will cover most basic emergencies

    Some 'press-studs'.
Few buttons - couple of different sizes.
    Grey thread.
    Needle-threader.
    Small pair of scissors.
    Trouser/skirt bar.

Wonder if you can still buy 'nappy pins' - they were the 'fix-all' when my kids were little ;).

I do need to buy mini pairs of scissors.

Will raid my home kit for the other bits.

    What are trouser bars?

What about those triangular warning signs they use in France or wherever. Maybe google some countries and see what they are required to have.

    It's one of THESE.

They come in two pieces and can be used on skirts and/or trousers for when there's no buttonhole. Stitch the 'bar' part on the underneath piece of fabric and the 'hook' part on the overlapping top piece of fabric.

Most haberdashers/sewing/knitting shops sell them - sometimes they come 'singly' instead of in a pack.

We always have a pack that we've filched when staying at posh hotels. Often it has neutral thread and some basic buttons (generally small, white for shirts) as well.

We always travel with some scissors. They're actually my DH's moustache trimming scissors but on holiday (only) used for sewing jobs, cutting off tags, nails etc.

i used to have a small sewing kit in a plastic case just a bit bigger than a matchbox. it had a spool with lots of different colour threads, a few needles, a few buttons, a needle threader, small fold up scissors and safety pins. while i would not recommend it to make a garment - but for a quick repair on the road/holiday it was good enough.
