I would ring the council and ask them if they can take the debt back? I'm not sure if this works in all cases, but I had a similar instance myself last week, but with a magistrate's court fine, and the court took it back and I am now paying them off instead.

Am I correct in thinking if you pay the original fine of £370 off, the bailiff's liability order ceases to have effect? I don't mean to ask you OP but perhaps someone else can help on this.

Did you get any correspondence from the council regarding this debt? The council is not allowed to send a bailiff before sending a Final Notice or Reminder.

Not sure if you've seen the forum 'Dealing with Bailiffs' but that might be worth a look, especially the page http://www.dealingwithbailiffs.co.uk/ctaxlegal.html

Hope I'm allowed to post outside links on the forum. I am not part of the website so I'm not promoting it. I've found it v helpful in the past.

I don't want to be pedantic for the sake of it but there isn't any kind of "fine" involved in council tax debt.

If the OP neglected to pay £370 of council tax back then they will owe that plus any legitimate fees that have been added to the debt (for example, council's costs for obtaining the LO, etc.)

Having said that, £370 going all the way to £950 sounds very much like rossendales are trying it on. If I were the OP, I would be contacting both the council and rossendales and asking for a breakdown of costs, and then if rossendales are trying to apply fees incorrectly I would then use this improper behaviour on the part of the council's agents as a justification for getting the council to take the debt back.

Yes everything you say is sound. I wrote 'fine' as I had been dealing with a similar situation, which was in fact a fine (driving without insurance) that had resulted in a Magistrate's Court fine. I think!

OP, have you done what was suggested as above? Please let us know how you got on.
