Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting so I'm still getting the hang of this and hope I posted in the correct forum.
Basically I had an enforcement officer at my door this morning but I was out so my husband spoke to him. He did however leave a letter with a phone number and saying that I must pay £950 by next week Tuesday for an old council tax bill dating back 3 years from a previous address.
I won't have the money by then.
I called the number on the letter to be told quite rudely I would need to get the money by then or he would come back with his enforcement removal team and tale goods from the house. When I asked if they had a court order he said no but a liability order from court or something. I told him I'm willing to pay but but I have to pay it off which the guy on the phone once again very rudely basically told me tough I have to have it by next week.
I don't know what to do 😢😢
Do I have to let them in??
Can they force entry if we are away as we are going away for a week next week and I'm worried that they will break down the door while we are away.
ANYONE HELP PLEASE??!!

The liability order is the court order which allows the council to instruct the bailiff. When I asked if they had a court order he said no but a liability order from court or something.
Have they already been in and taken control of goods ?Do I have to let them in??I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

Thank you for all the answers.
No they haven't been in my house yet. My husband didn't let them in. But the guy was very rude on the phone when I called and said they would be back next week to remove goods.
Do I have to let them in??
Also when we are away can they gain forceful entry ie knocking the door down?
And also we don't have goods worth that much as we are not loaded or anything.
What can I do now?0 -
Hi bedsit bob could you get in touch with me please?0

As previously stated, NO and NO.What can I do now?
Assuming you do actually owe the money, arrange a repayment schedule with them.
Alternatively, is there some way you could earn/beg/borrow the full amount, and pay it off?0 -

As stated above they need peaceful entry to the property for goods inside the property before they can return and force entry - they can however take control of goods that are outside the property and later remove these if payment isn't received.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. I have no one I could borrow the money from at all unfortunately.
Apparently I owe the council something like £370 but now it's £954 according to the letter the guy left with my husband.
I told him this is the first letter I had seen and why have I not had letter previously to which he said you must have had correspondence at another address then to which I said well I would obviously not know about that as I moved over a year ago from my old address and 3 years ago from the address where I owe council tax.
They have not removed any good inside or outside of my house yet and I'm not willing to let them in either as I don't have anything worth that much anyway.
So what will happen if they can't recover any good for the amount of £950?0 -
Also can someone please explain to me what levy means and also I just read some other instances with this company elsewhere and I wonder why from my original council tax bill of £370 or so it has now gone up to £950?? can they just do that and add all those charges??0
