Thinking of buying one, to use as both a still and video camera. The reviews I've read say it's superb for photos but barely mention the video quality.
Can anyone advise me?
Many thanks

Not used a Ixus 70 but I have a 60 and I am on the whole really pleased with it. I have rarely used the video function but what footage I have taken was suprisingly good as I recall. I have a Canon camcorder so usually use that for video.
The worst niggle I have with my 60 is the lack of a full manual mode for still shots. There is absolutely no rational reason why Canon didn't implement full manual mode and it is the one thing that stops me from recommending the Ixus as the perfect pocket camera.Joe

I have the 70 and it's good as a video camera, the only down side is that the video picks up a little camera whine noise.
The camera records in .avi format and here's a link to a bit of filming I did a while back (35mb avi).
And a link to an avi file converted with Windows Movie Maker (our Anniversary).0 -
Thanks a lot for those clips - the quality's great, and I think I'll go for one. I was thinking of the Samsung L80, but I've read good things about the Ixus. There's about a £25 difference, which isn't much, really.0

I have been buying the IXUS range since it was first launch with APS. Have had the 2 mg pixel, then made the mistake of buying a powershot (didn't like it but "luckily" it got stolen so I could buy an IXUS with the insurance!), then got the 700, my OH has the 70 and I recently picked another 700 up for my OH so he can use an underwater housing and start doing photography when we dive. I also have a Canon 300D but don't use it as much.
I have always found them to be a good alrounder which tends to bounce when dropped.
I carry it with me all the time. Recently, due to my sheer carelessness (for a girl, I am hamfisted!) I managed to damage the screen on my IXUS 700. I was really peeved as I loved that camera and use it with an underwater housing to dive with.
So, I managed to pick up a damaged one being sold for parts on ebay for £7 and replaced the screen - bit fiddly, but hey presto - working camera!
Dead chuffed.
Someone once told me - always buy a camera from a company that is first and formally a camera manufacturer. Then buy electricals from a company that is first and formost an electrical manufacturer - I strongly agree with this one.
Go for the Canons they are fab! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Excellent advice, and I quite agree.
I have stuck with Canon since A1 days, and have a 500 Ixus. The only minor downside, is that the lens mechanism doesn't like grit - Google for E18 error. I haven't suffered myself, but I wouldn't use it on the beach.
I recently bought an A640 and am really pleased with the quality from that too.
