I bought a great one via one of my wholesalers 4 years ago and it is still going strong, with one change of bulbs.
It is one similar to what they have in the fast food pplaces etc. It scares the crap out of you when it zaps something, but not had any issues with bugs since getting it.
Similar to http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ecomaster-Energy-Saving-Stainless-Insect/dp/B004BM37IU/ref=sr_1_64?ie=UTF8&qid=1406422796&sr=8-64&keywords=electric+fly+killer0 -
I've got one like this although mines Kingavon.

I just turn it on when a fly comes into the room, doesn't take much longer than 2 minutes before the fly goes into it. Yeah I agree there is something about the sound when the fly gets zapped that makes you jump a bit lol.0 -
Be aware of where you place them though - the shock sends bits of dead fly much further than the catch tray and so can contaminate uncovered food/surfaces below it. Or so a public health inspector friend warned me once, advising to keep them away from food prep areas.0

One of the best fly zappers I've ever had is one of these:
I don't know if the rechargeable ones are available in the UK but they are very effective (and good for entertainment at BBQ's). Their voltage output is around 2500 volts, and make light work of any flying beastie.0 -
