carers allowance-banking

Hi
I live with my Gran and although I have worked,I cared/helped outside work hours etc. I have now become unemployed and Gran has suggested I now make a claim for carer allowance. Have discussed it with job centre also at my interview for JSA.
It looks like my Nan would lose part of her benefits if I am awarded this.
Shes on DLA (mobility-high rate) (care-middle rate) income support which includes a disability premium of £25.25.
Her medical problems include angina, leaky mitral valve and epilepsy.

Also, can I ask for this to be paid into her bank account?
Thank you for any advice.

I think you should be able to do that, half way down the page on this link where it says How it's paid http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/CaringForSomeone/MoneyMatters/DG_10012522
  • Thank you very much. I just feel a bit guilty if she loses any benefit. Although I do quite a lot-sometimes she needs help at night (not often) the help/support I give is really in return for help and support she has given to us over the years.

The only part of Income Support (or Pension Credit) that's affected by a CA claim is the Severe Disability Premium (or SDP) which is paid at the same rate as CA. However, you don't get this premium anyway if someone else lives in the same household (well, anyone over 18 who doesn't get DLA Care Middle or Higher rate).

So, it looks like she should be ok. You can always ask the Pension Service to advise you - might be best asking for it in writing?
