Loan and credit rating

Hello all, hopefully you can help!

I am going away for 4 months to America (I live in England but have dual citizenship) to be a student for the Autumn semester. I need a loan to cover for things while I'm away, rent etc over here and buy things I need while over there.

Lloyds (my bank) turned me down today. First it was because I'd gone over my credit card limit (which I found out yesterday and paid down under the limit today) and then by the outside thing they called who said that even though I could afford the repayments, I wouldn't have enough 'leftover' from my paycheques for them to feel I confident in me.

I think I have good credit as I have always made my payments on time although i have gone over my credit card limit twice.

Is there a safe free website to check my credit rating? Should I try Tescobank for a loan?

Help! Thank you.
