Tax credits overpayment -help

Hi all
We just recieved our final decision on tax credits for this year and it seems that HMRC have overplayed me by a whopping £2200. Obviously this is quite a shock.
Upon talking to the lovely people on the phone I was told that I was never entitled to working tax credits at all despite being openly honest with my application and my earnings.
I initially applied in June 2013 after I started work in January of that year. When I completed the form I reported my 2012-2013 income as requested and even put down the date I started work as I stopped receiving JSA (due to starting work). It was never communicated to me or my partner that I had to include my estimated income.
We plan to dispute or appeal this decision as I feel that I was open with all of my information.
Any help on this situation?

Does that class as an income change though? I mean it was the exact same income weekly (I'm a temp contractor for a company so get paid weekly via an agency).
My hourly rate etc stayed the same.0 -
The claim form doesn't ask for an estimated income either

Yeah according to my P60 I earned different amounts in 2012-13 and 13-14. But I told hmrc I started work in January of 2013 of course it was different.
In hindsight I shouldn't have assumed that they would take the date I started work and factor that in
