Freecycle Nusiance

I am fed up with the whole Freecycle 'thing' in my group.
The 'wanted' requests have to be seen to be believed. Requests for cars, motorcycles, laptops, 26" silver flat screen TV, etc
I am convinced it is a happy hunting ground for EBAY sellers.

I remember someone turning up to collect something from me and I gave them a load of other stuff for the kid they had with them.....then I spotted the back of their estate car had nearly everything from that days Freecycle digest crammed into the back of it.
On the plus side I've had some genuine people turn up for stuff who have been appreciative and polite.
Rather than getting the digest if you get individual emails a decent spam filter can weed out the wanteds, takens, etc"A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
Someone tonight posted on my Freecycle group wanting a combine harvester and an aga!!!! On a slightly less demanding note someone else was wanting garden furniture but it had to be wood - no plastic, bit of a cheek I thought.
We've also had quite a few people complaining that folk say they want the stuff offered but then they never turn up for it.... think thats v rude and spoils it for everyone else0 -
I find freecycle great at times and then not so good at others

I just offered a wooden playhouse on our local one and received replies like:
I could pick it up tonight (several one line emails actually..which I found rather abrupt and rude)
Can you build it for me in my garden (bloomin heck we dismantled it for them what more do they want)0 -

EEEK!! I hope you deleted and barred their address! The cheek of it!!
The one line emails do my head in as well. What happened to basic courtesy? And if these people have no manners surely they realise that if they want to be picked out for the goods they should fake some?? *headdeskheaddeskheaddesk*0 -
I guess the thing with something like a greenhouse is that even the most avid car booters and ebayers are going to be a little daunted by dismantling and transporting a greenhouse! :rotfl:
Yes but i had seen the same greenhouse on ebay go for £80 and that had to be dismantled by the buyer0 -
I;ve read this thread with interest as I have used Freecycle to get rid of things we would otherwise send to the tip or throw away.
I had one case where a women replied to my two offers so quickly and I couldn't believe she genuinely wanted them so decided she must be a car booter/ebayer. However, no one else wanted them so I let her take them away. If others had come forward I probably would have given them to different people to be honest but also took the view that she was doing me a favour too (taking them away)
But grrr, it is waiting for people to collect and who don't show when they say they will that annoys me! Do you want me to leave this item outside my front door all weekend???0 -
I suppose the moderators have the first pick.
Deserve it I should think.0 -
Interesting reading.
I have used Freecycle briefly in the past both for offers and collections. However, this weekend we decided to sort our spare room to make way for the nursery.
Last night at 11pm I offered a Sony TV nothing wrong with it, just taking up needed space. Within seconds I had replies asking what colour it was, was it HD etc.
These people I think take the mick, if they want a tv then they want a tv.
I find some of the replies rather rude too, people just sending phone numbers or yes please. This really annoys me, manners cost nothing.
I've also offered a bed settee, so far I have had one reply, and this wasn't very polite to say the least. I think I will wait until others have had the chance to view the post.
Previously I have picked the first to respond, but now I am more choosy and prefer local polite people who seem geniune. It annoys me to think that someone has travelled a fair distance to collect the item, to only try and sell it on for a profit.

As the ethos behind freecycle is reducing the amount of stuff that goes to landfill it doesn't matter if the stuff goes to a "worthy cause" or someone who thinks they can make a couple of bob on Ebay.
Saying that I can't remember the last time I saw a combine harvester at the tip."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0
