I too am becoming disillusioned with Freecycle. The other day we had an Ann Summers rep "OFFER" parties! I alerted the mods who apologised and said that it should never have got through, but it hasn't been withdrawn!

I have got rid of a few things, and also replied to some offered posts but have NEVER got anything that's been offered. I have also posted a few wanted posts. I don't have a problem with them in particular, but agree people are taking the mick askiing for high value items. Never received anything myself.

Also, I'm very wary of the ethics that allow animals to be offered!

I'm five years into retirement and find Freecycle very useful. Read the wanted ads and often respond, gradually getting rid of a lifetimes junk.
Could get it all together I suppose and take it down the recycling centre but they chuck most of it straight into the skip.
  • I use a separate email address for freecycle. Only look at it when I have something to dispose of and delete everything else. Never had any problem with people collecting though but that is only with 5 or 6 items.

I would rather give to someone who has given several items in the past.

If you're group is operated on Yahoo, then login and use the search faciltity.

    I use FreeShare not FreeCycle.

The other day I advertised an item, which was virtually new and as I was having a major clear out, I picked out the person who had said they "could collect very quickly".

I responded to email giving my telephone number to arrange collection, pointing out that I had picked her because she said she could collect quickly, but had no reply. In the evening I sent another saying that a lot of people wanted the item - was she really interested?

Got another email back saying that she could not collect the item until the following day and that she would come between 2 and 2.30 (how specific is that???) Of course I would take the day off work just to accomodate her!

I emailed back that this was not convenient and suggested any evening that week, upon which I received an email saying why could I not just leave the item outside my door where she could collect it! Virtually brand new item, in box and I live on a very open terraced block with no gate. It would get nicked!!!

In the end I sent an email saying I had changed my mind. She sent one back saying I was pathetic and should not have advertised it! How she could have made good use of it blah blah.

I went back in to look at the responses and found a very nice one offering to collect that day or evening. I contacted him and he was round within the hour!

What really got me though was that this lady did not just pick up the phone and perhaps we could have had a better vibe going. I just felt like I was going to a lot of trouble wasting time e mailing, and having to accomodate her!!

I suppose I was wrong to assume when someone says they can collect very quickly that they meant that day?????

I would have added this to another Freecyle thread but could not seem to find one??

I wondered in the end after all the hassle whether I should have advertised the item in the small ads and got myself some money for it??

You get these in every group. I would say don't let a few bad apples ruin the batch.

She lost out because she messed you around, and then will lose out again because she is bitter, and can't take responsibility for her own plebness.

The gentleman who came around within the hour will win every time because he deserves to.

Freecycle is such a great idea that is occasionally spoiled by just a few people.

I know I really should get a life, but when offering items I've taken to checking my "Deleted items" in my mailbox, and if a requester has never offered anything to the group, I choose someone else.

But it's the Wanted ads that get me. The numbers creep up until we start getting more Wanted than Offered - then the mods tell people off and it just start over again...

But at least the underlying principal is good!

Laptops are the most requested items in my group. Today there were several requests - this being the best:

I've had people do the same thing as the OP, i offered a computer cabinet and a phone gadget. Both said they'd get it on a prescribed day, neither turned up. Both wanted me to leave items outside in the rain (!!!) but i didn't and they never turned up anyway. I didn't hear anything off one and got an abusive email from the other. I take everything down to the charity shop now. People have been advertising for Laptops, Wiis, leather sofas (MUST be cream and under 2 years old) - why can't they get real?
