Food Storage Containers for School

Hello Everyone,

Please excuse any faux pas that I make; I am an avid reader of the Forum but have always been to nervous to post. My son who is 3 is starting school in the next few weeks (his 4th birthday is the day he goes to school!) and I need to purchase 2 water bottles and 2 containers (one set for school, one set for nursery). The containers are just for snacks for break time and so need to be small ish ideally. I am trying to get water bottles that are insulated as are the containers that aren't too grown up or big but all I can find on the search engines are very expensive brands or ones with rubbish reviews! I am assuming that these are likely to go walkies at some stage and so I definitely do not want to have to spend a lot of money. May I ask if any of you ladies or gentlemen have some ideas?

Thank you!

Might it be easier and cheaper to get an insulated lunch bag and then put normal drinks bottles and food containers into it? The supermarkets usually have a good selection of bags, some character ones, some plain and simple. I wouldn't expect to pay more than a few pounds for a plain one. If you wanted to keep the contents extra cool, you could put one of those small ice packs into the bottom of the bag, or you could freeze the drink so it'll be defrosted but cold at break time.

For tubs, I like Systema ones. Not particularly the fancy ones with little compartments, just the normal single compartment tubs. The clips are sturdy and they do well in the dishwasher. Unlike some brands, my kids can undo the clips on them (they're nearly 3 and 5).

Thank you for the advice - it was the clips that I was worried about given his age!

  • I work in school and see how the kids throw them around/ lose them / drop kick them etc - definitely go for a cheap one as it WILL get lost and or broken ! Also , try and make it different - they get stressed when they cant find them - and unless it jumps out and waves at them , kids cant find them however 'hard' they look ! quite a few of our parents with little kids use little bags instead of boxes inside their lunch bag/box - that way they can open them easily.

Thank you! I teach 10 to 18 year old boys and I can tell you that it doesn't change as they get older!

Will fruit not be provided for him during break time? Also do the school offer the free milk for 4 year olds? As for water bottles, Wilkinsons do some great ones with a flip lid for about £1.25 and come in different colours.

for a water bottle I suggest one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sistema-Twister-Bottle-460ml-Aqua/dp/B002NPC0WQ

My ds has had loads of styles of bottles they never last long as they start to leak. This is the only one I have found that does not leak.

I let him stick stickers on it to make it more personal and trendy.

Thank you all for your advice and help. Little man is lactose intolerant and so I have got to provide his milk myself as the school doesn't provide alternatives. Also, the Head advised that I bring snacks as the fruit and veg can be a bit hit and miss for the littlest ones. He can bring any fruit, or plain biscuits provided that it has no nuts or chocolate. Also dried fruit.

    Thank you once again everyone!
