Hi
I'm new here, so apologies if this is the wrong area to post.
We've found a lovely flat to rent. I'm the only one working as my OH is looking after our son for now, so the Lettings agency is doing checks for me. So far they've asked me for my passport, a copy of my payslip or P60, a copy of my bank statement... Seems so over the top!
I sometimes go overdraft (within my authorised limit) - will this matter?
I have no CCJs, no missed payments, etc... Could they fail me if they think our budget is too tight? Even if I've paid the same amount of rent for the past 4 years?
This is making me sick with worry as they just keep emailing me asking me for more info! The company the agency is using is KeySafe.
If you have any advise, please let me know.. I'm dying with anxiety here

You have to confirm the PURPOSE as defined under the data protection act.
Chances are they only want your bank statement to confirm your old address.
You can redact out all of the figures, just leave the dates and the things you spent the money on.
Just because people ask for something it does not mean you have to provide it.
I would start by firing off an email asking them to confirm the purpose for which these will be used, who they will be shared with etc.
Do not submit via a website that has hidden or onerous terms and conditions that you are forced to agree to by submitting your data. Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !0 -
I can't offer you any advice but I would be very interested to hear the outcome of this query. I hear anecdotally about prospective tenants being asked to provide copies of the credit files to landlords. This is of interest to me because I have a problem on my credit report that Im trying to sort out precisely because I hope to rent next year. Please keep the forum informed.0

Hello. I passed the checks. Apparently the documents were to confirm my ID (passport), address (statement) and income (payslip). The agency has a rule of salary having to be at least 30 times the monthly rent. But all was good, I got a call yesterday saying all was clear. What a relief! I was so anxious because everytime they kept asking me for more documents, so I thought something was wrong.0
