When to move house

My wife has just informed me that in the 13 years that we have lived in our current property - we have spent £60K on home improvements !!
This includes carpets, new kitchen, bathroom, windows etc etc
Had we moved home, at the time - we obviously would not have spent anywhere near this - but at what point do I throw in the towel and move house - because the house is now, near 100% - with very little needing spending on it for the next X years .......

Do you actually want to move? Why can't you just stay where you are?

Agreed - if you've just finished getting the house right for you, why move?0

Seems a bit strange that your wife has informed you of how much you've spent on the house - did you not have any idea of what you'd spent on it until now?!0

It can be hard to keep track of expenditure sometimes, by the time there is another little "drib" and then another little "drab" etc etc to spend.
I think I've spent about £25,000 to date and will soon have brought that up to around £30,000. Then I will have to wait for more money to be able to spend another £20,000 to finish it.
Sometimes you just don't want to think about exactly how much it has all cost, particularly about those expenditure that are down to "Previous owner didn't even maintain the place properly".
I'll echo the "Don't move now you've spent all that" thoughts. Just be grateful you can actually have some of your own money for yourself at last, without the "house grabbing every spare penny and more for itself" (which is how you come to think of it in the end....).0 -
unless you have a compelling reason...new job....new baby...why move after you have done all that work?
If you like doing places up then moving, then 13-years is an extended period.0 -
Surely the point of spending the money was to achieve a house that you want to live in, so why move ?0

Exactly - but my wife has been wanting to move for years
My problem being how do you decide when to relocate and when to carry on updating the present property ?
Because we have already paid more than it is worth in terms of initial spend + upgrade costs !!0 -
Perhaps , pointing out how much money will be lost will discourage your wife. There is not just the cost of renovations to consider, but those of selling, buying , moving and, possibly , altering the new property.0

Some of that money was just to maintain the property rather than increase it's value. However have you been spending so much in order to try and like the house when in actual fact it's not the right place for you?Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0
