Car finance ppi

We took out a finance loan for a car way back in 1991 or 1992, at which point we were told we needed to take out a ppi in the event of unemployment. We made a point of questioning whether it would cover for self-employment and we were assured it would.
After several months to one year of paying (I can't remember exactly), husband lost his work and we tried to make a claim to tide us over while he looked for another job. Immediately we were told by the insurance company that we weren't covered because he was self-employed. We stopped all payments for the insurance but continued to pay for the loan as best we could. The insurance company started to pursue us for payments, despite the fact it was of no use to us whatsoever. Inevitably we got behind with the loan payments and ended up having to hand the car back voluntarily.
After several house moves over the years, we no longer have any paperwork....all I know is that the loan company was VAG Finance. Do we have a realistic chance of claiming ppi? I was thinking of getting a no win, no fee company to do the work because I really don't know where to start.

Sadly due to the year this was taken out, the company you got the car from would not have been regulated and due to this the Ombudsman cannot help either, having the paperwork would not help either.
please do not use a claims co as they cannot win this for you.0 -
Neither would any claims company.I was thinking of getting a no win, no fee company to do the work because I really don't know where to start.
Any complaint from prior to January 2005 is pre-regulation for car dealers and so they wouldn't have to even consider any complaint you might make.
Paperwork is irrelevant.0 -
