EDF back billing code HELP

I was a customer of EDF for several years for electricity and in August 2012 switched my gas from British Gas to EDF and joined the Blue Price Promise. My monthly direct debit payments were calculated by EDF for both fuels and were taken monthly, I submitted meter readings and also had the meters read by EDF. I also received annual statements showing my predicted usage for both Electric and gas.

In April 2014 I informed EDF that I was moving and wished to close my account. This is when the nightmare began!

EDF informed me that they had not billed me for electric since August 2012 despite all of the above having taken place. I asked for an explanation of how the error occurred, a breakdown and final bill. None of this happened but they did attempt to take £975.01 from my account without sending a bill or any other information. I had the foresight to cancel the direct debit before hand so they never got the money.

I informed them that the back billing code should be applied as the error was clearly made by them and they agree but when calculating my final bill EDF use the starting point from August 2012 and include usage from that date and apply charges.

Am I wrong in thinking that it should start from Apirl 2013 as the code states they cannot charge for energy used more than a year ago as they failed to bill me.

Also from April to date I have had FIVE different final bills.
£975.01, £859.96, £589.96, £675.01 and lastly £859.42.

Your entitlement to the Back-Billing agreement being applied to your bill is not straight forward

The agreement was put in place to save customers who had not been billed for over a year from Bill Shock, but customers who have been paying D/Debits over the non-billed period will have built up a large credit on the account which eliminates Bill Shock, so the Back-billing agreement does not usually apply to them

However your bill now you have got it, seems to have soaked up all the D/Debit credits on your account leaving a final debit balance of £975, and that most certainly is Bill Shock

You will have to argue your corner toget Back-billing relief, so WRITE a letter to EDF headed Complaint, listing the confusion of the bills you've had and giving a figure of what you think the bill should be reduced by
  • I've lost count of the emails I've sent to EDF. They agree the Back Billing Code applies but they are not applying it correctly. The amount of £975 is just one of FIVE different final bills! It's a farce.

I have been in touch with the ombudsman and they agreed with me that EDF are not applying the code correctly and that they CANNOT charge me for the period from August 2012 to April 2013 despite EDF stating that the Back Billing Code does not remove charges.

EDF have an attitude that they are right and point blank avoid giving an explanation as to how they arrived at all these different amounts.

I wonder how many people have been hoodwinked by EDF and paid money that they did not have to pay because of EDF's inability to apply the code as it should be. If they did in my case my final bill should be £23.76. Quite a difference to what they want to take which ever final amount is taken into account.
