I'm 4 months into a 24 month Orange(EE) contract... I wouldn't have signed to renew my phone contract if i knew i would be moving abroad but this oppertunity came about so suddenly. i leave in september, as i'm going to be abroad for well ever. i dont need an english phone contract. but if i come out i would have to fork out £590 which i don't want to do? Any suggestions of what i could do to avoid that?

(I'm a student going to study medicine abroad... So I won't back for 6yrs that's if I end up coming back)

Are you sure it's £590 to settle the account.....they might accept a little less than the full contract value. What's the phone worth brand new? What could you get for selling it and using the money to settle the contract. I imagine you want to keep the phone and so therefore you'll have to pay for it. Phones aren't really free the cost is part of the monthly contract.

If you don't intend to return to the UK in the next 6 years then you could do a runner. If however this contract doesn't work out and you do return you'll have this debt on your credit record and you may find it impossible to get a mortgage or even rent a property.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

You're liable for the full amount. The most likely outcome is that you will need to pay the full whack.
Are there any friends or family nearing the end of their contract you could transfer your contract to?
If Orange ask for the full payment, could you ask them to return the phone as part-payment to offset some of it? You're only 4 months in so the phone is still fairly new.
Alternatively, sell the phone and use the money to help pay off the balance.

How many people say they're going abroad and never coming back, only to return six months later? Don't burn bridges OP, no point in messing up a credit score that you might need in the future.
