Apple's £60 voucher for students isn't.

Apple are offering a £60 Apple Store Gift Card if you purchase a Mac using your Student discount.

However, its really only £12 because Apple first charges you for that voucher, and then takes that figure away again, minus the VAT.

If you're making a big purchase like a Mac then this technique effectively adds £48 to the cost of the Mac at time of purchase, leaving you with only a £12 saving/voucher to use in the Apple store online or in their shops.

So its not really a £60 saving at all.

Note that they don't call it a saving, they call it a voucher. But the customer is paying for that voucher.

If that is not clear to the customer aren't Apple being a little loose with the facts?

What are you on about. It adds £60 the takes off £60 before the VAT is calculated. You don't end up paying anymore, they are not selling it as a £60 discount off the mac.

I think One Brain Cell has got his/her figures mixed up as well. As VAT is 20%, the £12 would be the VAT and not what he/she was left with. Not only that, I seem to recall that VAT is listed separately on Apple receipts. When I bought my iPhone around a year ago, there was an offer of a £30 voucher if you were a student. I had no problem at all getting it.

Does One Brain Cell work for Samsung haha? ;)
  • I bought a Macbook using student discount recently and got my £60 voucher for free no problem, they do not add £60 to the cost of the laptop
