Buying things for house I haven't yet bought

I need someone to come and confiscate all my cards and money for the next month or so. I'm sale agreed on a house and our solicitors are in the contract writing stage, so for the next few weeks it could still fall through. My favourite thing about this house is that it has a fantastic garden and is set up in a way that I can create a separate play garden for my son.
The problem is, all the great garden toys are heavily reduced right now and bit by bit I've managed to buy quite a bit of it.:o I have a shed stuffed with boxed up garden stuff and no guarantee that I'll have somewhere to put it. On the plus side I've managed to get more items than I had on my wishlist for less than half my budget. And if worst comes to worst and I end up in a house with a garden too small to accommodate most of it, the resale for this stuff will actually be close enough to what I paid for it. But I'm so excited to see my little man's face when I set it all up for him and about all the great times he and my friends' kids will have there that I'll be devastated if the house sale falls through.

I'm in the same boat although I have managed to stop myself from spending...but I SOOOO cannot wait to be able to actually buy stuff.
But we've had 2 houses fall through so think I have learnt to be patient the long way!0 -
Blimey - wouldn't buy a thing until exchange! Sod the sales - there'll be others.
But then I've bought 7 properties over the years and have lost many through chains collapsing!
Oh, and don't put anything on the credit card (unless you're paying it straight off) as that really won't go down very well if the lender does a spot-check or you have to reapply for a mortgage!
I know it's exciting, but try not to get too carried away! And don't forget there's TONNES of stuff even cheaper second hand. Often no need to buy brand new.
Good luck

I sigh every time I look at the lovely Chinesey-style plates that I bought because they would have been absolutely perfect for the flat that I was buying at the time. We were literally days before exchange... or so I thought... and I'd been so strict with myself up until then about not buying anything.
The purchase fell through and these plates don't "go" at all with the flat I've now bought, but they were sufficiently expensive that I'm not just going to throw them away. And I wish I'd waited!
Garden furniture is a little different though, presumably even if this place falls through you'll still buy somewhere with a reasonable garden space.0 -
Agree with the comments above - don't buy anything that's specific to that house until exchange.
Though I am intrigued as to how plates can go (or not go) with a house?

I know! It sounds absolutely insane doesn't it. But you know when you look at a place and you visualise a theme of how you would decorate and furnish? Well I had that vision with the first place that ended up falling through, and it was grey and precise and would have looked great with less-is-more type furnishings and accessories, and then I had a completely different vision when I viewed this flat (which is far more robust and colourful, not words which go with delicate china plates with pretty blossoms on them).
Go on, now ask me how in Heaven's name a flat can be (or not be) "robust". I'm not at all sure I can answer that.

I get it.
We have lots of things that don't suit our home. Some suit us, so they are staying any way, others.......are harder. Some we love and are storing in case we can use elsewhere in the future, others we are girding our loins to get rid of.
Buying new I'd hold off, especially as that first month in a new place is SO expensive.0 -
We're trying to buy at the moment and I have to stop myself buying stuff for the new place, as we're so far from completing and at the moment it just feels like we're going backwards! I know how easy it is to get carried away but you just have to stop yourself - years ago I bought a load of fabric to make curtains for a flat we were going to move into. It was a rental and we were let down very badly at the last minute. I ended up giving the fabric away as I couldn't even bear to look at it as it just brought back such awful memories. I just remember that and it stops me from doing the same again now!0

I did exactly the same thing when moving into my current place & it all ended up in the shed for months after the move as moving/decorating/furnishing was so much work that I was exhausted by just the thought of setting up garden toys. I went to Poundland & bought a load of stuff that didn't need setting up - bubbles, balls, tennis bats etc & the kids were over the moon with those in the meantime.
Fingers crossed for you & enjoy your new house.

Awaiting mortgage offer, I've planned everything in my head but keep stopping myself buying things. I'm the same, all the kids garden stuff is in the sale but I keep telling myself no. I start my new job next week after being a sahm for almost two years so my first pay packet will probably be gone as soon as I get it!0
