Try using a mixture of dionised water and stardrops all purpose cleaner. You can get the former very cheaply if you buy in bulk (25 litres is less than a tenner) and it works great for ironing too. Stardrops is about 80p for a litre and a few drops is plenty for screenwash. This also makes a great household cleaner so really you can save by buying these for your house and they just so happen to make great screenwash, wheel cleaner, engine degreaser etc etc.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Thanks for the tip. Do you use this neat or diluted?

On the 5 litre container it says it can be diluted up to 5:1 but I'm using it at a mix of 3:1

I am very wary of using harsh chemicals to clear off insect debris as it would be too easy to strip of the polish and protection sealant I took so long (and put a load of effort into) applying.

Sometimes I find it necessary to clean the windscreen properly when I have a break on long journeys, at a motorway service area or suchlike.

I suppose having a clean screen is partly psychological, but it's like you re-start the journey fresh and helps relieve eye strain.

What I use for that is BMW Intensive Windscreen Cleaner which is designed to be used from a second washer tank. I don't have such a sophisticated (and expensive) system, but carry a small trigger spray bottle of it undiluted in the boot along with a small brush of the type used to polish shoes.

It's magic stuff, and a litre bottle lasts years, as you only need a quick squirt/spray.
