As others have said, it isn't just teachers who need a DBS check. Although I realise that you are currently unemployed and it is a high cost, many others are in the same position. Careworkers need the enhanced checks as well, and often have to pay for their own, but will never have the earning potential of a teacher. It certainly isn't a tax on teachers - it is a service that is required by many companies who come into regular contact with those who are classed as vulnerable, including children, the elderly, and adults with disabilities. Doctors, nurses, speech therapists, careworkers, sports coaches, drivers, school escorts.... the list is far more than just teachers.

Regarding your volunteer position - there is no charge for volunteers, except an admin charge (depending on which umbrella company is used), and as you have found, that cost is often covered by the place that you are volunteering for.

It won't be much use in your case, but my daughter's CRB (as it was at the time) was paid for by Connexions when she was 18, as she had only JSA, but the promise of a job if she had a CRB check (for a particular company, and in addition to the one she already held as a Brownie Guider).
