Ok so my wife and I have been together almost 10 years and we are already on our 4th Bed and now need another ?!!
At first we were sharing a single divan so that had to go, we then went onto a steel frame bed, fairly cheap and pretty much got what we paid for lasted a couple of years with repairs to the frame the only thing keeping it going.
After this we went for a more expensive wooden frame bed not a great mattress but still ok, again lasted a couple of years and needed repairing in the middle to keep it up.
Finally when money became a little easier we splashed out on a sealy divan, cushioned mattress the works and after just over 4 years now its going to need replacing, the wooden frame of the divan is cracked in a couple of places and one piece has broken off, and the non-flip mattress has ended up with 2 dips from the rotating method.
So my questions are, does anyone know of any sturdy beds that will last a bit longer than 4 years ? or is this the normal change cycle for a bed frame ? and also how long would you expect a good mattress to last ? we paid £800 for the bed so was hoping it would last a little longer than it has.
As a bit of information, the wife and I are a little overweight but by no means huge a combined weight of around 25st .

I got my mum a bed from JohnRyan and it has thus far been fantastic. Only snag was one of the draws were damaged (they replaced it within seven days) and they did not assemble the bed on delivery which they were supposed to do (they appologised for this as the delivery people were misinformed).
Even if you don't buy from them, read the website as it gives a lot of useful information, that way you are armed with the knowledge to go to other retailers and negotiate a bit or at least know if someone is trying to rip you off!

Your sealy bed costing 800 pounds 4 years ago should have lasted a lot longer than that.
I would write to them and ask about the durability of their beds and tell them you were disappointed in the length of time it has lasted.
You might just get a good discount on a new one:Dmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
My bed was from the Original Bedstead Company (Tain) and I expect it to last forever.
I have had my Tempur mattress for nearly 10 years and it is as good as the day I bought it.0 -
Thanks for the info, JohnRyan is a superb site so thank you pathsofdarkness for that link, full of useful information and no sales Jargon excellent.
SuzieSue, are the beadsteads solid ? i have had so many bad experiences with metal/wood bed's i thought a divan was the answer (sadly not!)0 -

The Tain is about as solid as you can get, but then it is expensive (around £1,000 in Dreams). The cheaper OBC beds aren't as solid so you get what you pay for.0 -
Warren Evans came recommended to me; we'd since bought two beds/matresses and quality/service is superb. Prices seem quite reasonable as well.0

Our current bed (superking) cost £2500 including the mattress from TheStorageBed company. I expect it to last a lifetime.
Our previous one (superking) is in one of the spare bedrooms after more than 10 years of faithful service. It originally cost around £800.
We've recently had to replace the slats on our toddler's £700 single bed after just 2 years. She weighs less than 3 stone. I think beds are just built badly nowadays with very cheap materials. A set of slats from Ikea has done the trick for £10 and is far sturdier than the originals! Appalling.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Had a Harrison bed & mattress couple of years now. Has been great, really comfy, didn't get much change out of £2K though.
One downside is the mattress is really heavy... it nearly killed the removal men when we moved address..
I completely squashed a temporary wardrobe with once ( one of those steel frame & canvas things ) was turning it over and I lost it... oops.0 -
We have an Ikea mattress on a discontinued Dreams bedframe, bought a year ago.
The mattress was chosen after using the demonstration video in the store. It cost £400 and is really comfy.

Blimey, I'm amazed that you are finding beds only last a few years. We bought a solid oak bed frame from our local charity shop five years ago for £40, and it's not only going strong, it appears to be bouncy-toddler-proof indestructible!:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls
