Just wanted to share how my family enjoy cheap holidays.

We go to London and we book a Travelodge in the sale (well in advance). If you are prepared to stay out of the centre (but within short tube journey) you can save a lot. We managed £29 a night during August for one at Cricklewood.
So cheap digs.

We save all our Tesco clubcard points and trade them in for restaurant vouchers given you get 3/4 times over their worth.
Meals sorted.

Lots of places are free to visit like The British Museum, The National Gallery etc.

Book train travel in advance and get really good deals.

My guess is you can do this in many of our cities.
We've done weekend city breaks including travel for 3 of us for less than £100 all in!!.

There are some good deals out there if you plan ahead and keep it basic and simples.
Where there's muck, there's brass :T
