I don't think I did get anything backward - at least not in my experience.

M-Benz and BMW have had dedicated handbrake drums and shoes contained in the rear hubs since the early 80s at least - completely operationally separate from the rear discs/calipers/pads.

As for the MOT Test the efficiency for a parking or handbrake needs to be 16% - yes only 16%

Pages and pages about how to carry out the tests - but the figures are here in Section 3.10:

It'sa rare french beast so little point in me mentioning the make / model as it won't really mean anything to anyone.

    Matra Bagheera?
    Facel Vega?
    Renault 4?

enquiring minds want to know! :D

Simple test I use is to see if I can torque up the wheel nuts with the back end jacked up and the handbrake on. If it's good enough to stop the wheel rotating when you do this then it's usually good enough to pass the MoT.

I hate to sound stupid here, but is a 100% efficient handbrake even an MOT defectable item? My handbrake has been crap for a couple of years and has never failed. Don't get me wrong, it holds the car just about on a flat or slight slope, but I have to pull it on pretty tight and on a really serious incline it won't hold it at all. I just leave it in gear out of habit.

I don't think so. According to the MoT manual, the lever must be secure without excessive play, must hold in the 'on' position, must not be able to be released accidentally, the ratchet must work correctly, the lever must not be at the end of its travel, there must not be inappropriate repairs or modifications, and there must not be corrosion around the mountings. Nothing that I can see about brake efficiency or balance.

That's a shame really, as my understanding of the C&U Regs is that the handbrake must constitute a separate braking system in case of the total failure of the service brake. But I'm probably well out of date there.

Yes, handbrake performance is part of the test (under "brake performance" rather than "handbrake")

But for modern cars 9with dual circuit foot brakes) the minimum performance is a measly 16% efficiency, which it frankly pretty !!!!!!!

Single circuit footbrakes need 25% available from the handbrake, and our Dafs will actually pull closer to 45% when they're adjusted up right (enough for handbrake turns on dry tarmac ;) )

Didn't look hard enough :) I stand corrected.

I would budget for some of the perishables to be replaced, my mate has recently bought an 8 series BMW that did have a comprehensive service history but was then left in the garden for 8 years by the owner, all of the brake pipes had to be replaced, one calliper and the majority of the rubber components. He also had all the fluids changed including a tank full of fresh fuel.
