Home network cat 5e

I have BT home hub 3 and run my old BT Hub 2 as a slave to extend the range via power line adapter. I'm thinking of running a Cat 5e cable between the hubs.
Has any one run the cables outside the house? Any problems with it?

Ideally you should use exterior grade cable with UV stabilised sheathing

This. Costs a little extra but will work fine. Make sure the cable runs 'up' into the hole so water doesn't run in.

    Just to clarify this point.

Up into both holes, so put a little 'U' loop under each hole.

What's the reason you want to run CAT5e rather than continue to use the power line plugs?

Speed would be my guess. The fastest power line adaptors still don't match a direct cable. There is also the fact that they do fail eventually, and that they do consume a little power.

I have power line adapters at my parents without a single issue for the last 5 years! Power consumption is very little.

Granted, a cable with a 1Gb/s switch will be faster than the current generation of home plugs, however if the sole reason is to access the internet, then 100Mb/s home plugs are more than enough!
You only really need 1Gb speeds if you regularly transfer large files between multiple machines, or have a network storage box.

I did say they fail eventually, and consume a little power. I think it was Tesco who taught us 'Every Little Helps'. ;)

I also said speed was the likely reason. :)

I can't say what the OP does or does not do, but I use mine for streaming of 1080P content which tends to stutter a little on some (usually not the 200-500mb/s AV type) of the power line adaptors. I also transfer a lot of HD recordings from box to box.

I do actually use Power line adaptors, but I would switch to a cable if I could.

Was at work and could not check the updates.
Thanx guys for the prompt reply.
My current powerline adapter is rubbish at speeds and my 2nd hub drops off inbetween and the cost for installing a ethernet cable is cheaper and the speeds are way better.
    Speed is the main reason.
Thank you for the tip on U loop

Initial stages of Home network and Home server - Looks like best served with ethernet cable.
Also the electric cables in my home go through circuit breakers and that drops the Powerline adapter speeds!!

    Just to update.
Have run cat5e csble from hub3 to hub2. Three hours in total. Bought 40m cable (outdoor) and a crimping tool.
But had to run it through the house and through walls ( there was gap between pipes)
Usde a bit of cable to make a few more patch cable - now except my mobile devices all on wired.
PS: Cost me £22, with plenty of cable left
