Autoglass chip repair

Ouch, I always wondered how this autoglass could make money and instead for the first time in my driving life, I have my windscreen chipped.

I read the repair is free on my aviva insurance, but what does free actually mean? Will it affect my premium?

No effect at all - I've had 3 chips repaired in the last 2 years - also with Aviva.

The repairs are not completely invisible - but a load better than they were as far as looking through the screen is concerned.

Autoglass give a guarantee that if the screen subsequently does crack they will replace it for free.

Don't be so sure. While Direct Line haven't charged me for having a windscreen replacement, they always remind me that I claimed.

It is a claim and a tiny number of insurers will not award you any additional NCD in a year you make a glass claim - but they dont take any away either (ie if you had 3 years NCD and then made a glass claim at the end of that policy year you'd still only have 3 years NCD). The majority dont do this though and you'd still gain another years NCD in the year.

In theory insurers could load premiums for glass claims but in practice I'm not aware of any that do. More commonly they may add an endorsement to exclude glass cover if you make an excessive number of glass claims but certainly one or two in a year or two isnt going to trigger that. More the case where someone keeps smashing your windows but not taking anything.

    Hi

Thanks for your post. I can confirm glass claims do not affect your No Claims Discount or your premiums with us if you are insured directly. If your policy is through a broker it may be slightly different and you would need to refer to them to confirm this.

I hope that helps, but if you have any further questions please feel free to post them here or contact us directly at social@aviva.co.uk

    Kind regards

    Dave
