Ah see I find it the other way round - my lettuce goes horrible after a few days where as the bags last a while...

I've started putting kitchen towel at the bottom of my fridge drawer to soak up any water but its still happening...

Maybe I'm storing / doing something wrong?

Check the temp of your fridge maybe? I keep mine very cold & line my fruit/veg drawers with kitchen towel that I refresh about once a week. The iceberg lettuce in there is from my shop nearly two weeks ago, we have been peeling off the odd leaf for sandwiches each day and it is still crispy and good to use. I take all fruit/veg out of the packaging and put it straight into the drawers.
Mortgage free as of 11/11/15 !
:Anow... to start some serious saving :A

  • Thought I would let you know what I've been up to ..

Today I ordered a girl called Jack from the library and I've booked out a preservative book (gonna make me some jam!)

In my freezer now I have:

    Mince and onions
    Swede mash
    Fish in cous cous x4
    Chilli con carne
    Chicken pie
    Sausage pie

And my shopping bill halved this week so far!!!

I do use 'Cheap' soap powder (Morrison's stuff) but haven't been to Aldi's yet. My daughter goes to Gymnastics on a Mon so my plan is to drop her off and then head to aldis (if I need anything)

Thank you all so so much
  • 1.please don't feed lettuce to your rabbit, it is bad for her. Likewise, if it is not fit for you to eat, it is not fit for her.
    2. If you are serious about reducing your food bill look very closely at your shopping list.
    A)Cola?????
B)If you have a menu plan look in your cupboards and only buy what you need, if you can't use all you buy because you have to buy packs that are too big, re plan your menu to use left over ingredients the next day. Avoiding waste.
C)Give up pudding, we only do that on some Sundays.
    D) home bake, never buy pastry, cake, buns, or bread (unless it is reduced or on offer)
    F) freeze leftovers and don't forget them!
    G) shop and the well known discount supermarkets, the mainstream ones are shockingly expensive and usually not as good. The smaller range , less choice helps you buy less you don't need.

    Good luck

Hi Mimi - just wondering if you got to Aldi and what you thought?
  • 1.please don't feed lettuce to your rabbit, it is bad for her. Likewise, if it is not fit for you to eat, it is not fit for her. The RSPCA advises that Dark / Leafy Lettuce is fine for rabbits to have (and it was romaine lettuce we got) and our rabbits have a varied diet (and not just lettuce) - but thanks anyway :)
    2. If you are serious about reducing your food bill look very closely at your shopping list.
A)Cola????? Yes - and as I've pointed out ^^^ I'm cutting down and drinking other things but i'm not going to go OTT on EVERYTHING - I'm still gonna buy cola (for me, the kids don't drink this!) and the kids can still have their weekly treat (they don't have sweets etc)
B)If you have a menu plan look in your cupboards and only buy what you need, if you can't use all you buy because you have to buy packs that are too big, re plan your menu to use left over ingredients the next day. Avoiding waste. Started to do this
C)Give up pudding, we only do that on some Sundays. We only ever have pudding on a Sunday anyway
    D) home bake, never buy pastry, cake, buns, or bread (unless it is reduced or on offer) Again, we bake on a Sunday (pudding!) we never buy pastries unless they are on offer
    F) freeze leftovers and don't forget them! Started to do this :)
    G) shop and the well known discount supermarkets, the mainstream ones are shockingly expensive and usually not as good. The smaller range , less choice helps you buy less you don't need. Again, because of where I live this isn't always possible. We don't have any supermarkets near by (have to drive to them all for at least 20 minutes) and the "local" shops are extortionate

    Good luck

    Hi!

Hi - No I never managed to get there in the end :( I don't NEED to go shopping now until the 14th (yeah... we shall see!) but we're going on holiday at the end of the month so I might try Aldi's then to do a stock shop of goodies for the break

    Thanks!

Sounds like you are doing a great job.
It's never easy and the reality is that saving money takes a bit/lot more time and effort and I sometimes struggle with that myself.
Sometimes it's a straight out choice between having the treats and going without or going to the effort of finding/making a cheaper alternative and only a saint would make the right choices every time.
Make the easy changes a regular part of your routine. If you like Coke buy one bottle a week/a month/for a once in a blue moon treat. Bake if you have time, bulk cook when you have the ingredients. Just do your best with the resources that you have.
We're all in different lives and have different choices. I live close to all the supermarkets so can shop around a little. Maybe pop into Aldi when you happen to be going that way and see what you think. Perhaps use it every few months to stock up on tinned goods. I live in an inner city area with the usual social problems and I've never seen brawling customers, drinking and smoking infants, trolley theft or any other anti social behaviour! The shop is always clean and well stocked and personally I prefer their fruit and vegetables as I find that they last longer than Tesco fresh produce ( I like Sainsburys best but heyho I forgot to marry a millionaire!)
Good luck with your continuing quest to cut your food bill. Think of it as a challenge rather than a chore and don't berate yourself if you have a bad week and overspend-it happens, you just have to try and be better next time.
