old fashioned pantry

I like this thread. I'm going to put something on it.
Well, I always wanted a proper pantry but when I finally got one in this house, it became the downstairs loo, the kitchen became the dining room end of a dining-kitchen and the dining room became the kitchen end
With me so far?
However, there was a small internal cupboard in what had been the dining room. At last, I thought, a pantry! No good. The kitchen designer, the builder and DH all wanted to get rid of it. I stuck my heels in. There was a huge battle. Lots of shaking of heads. In the end, I have the same cupboard but its been boarded up from one side and we now access it from the hall.
One day, it will have shelves. However, poor DH is working as hard as he can and all these alterations cost money.
It's not about hoarding food. We have an allotment, though, and a tiny freezer. I'm hoping to pickle/dry/bottle much of it and store it at ambient temperature, thus making the best of what we have. If nothing else, perhaps I could have a freezer in there although I don't want it to raise the temperature. There is no outside ventilation but DH says that we can put a vent into the floor. Very clever.
So, at last, one day I might have a pantry. At the moment, it has laminate flooring and a tool box in it0 -
Wonderful thread!
I'm working towards building a proper pantry into our kitchen. I'm looking to putting in shelves all around the walls, then putting doors made from perforated metal across the areas with open food. It'll be, hopefully, rather like a huge version of the old meat safe. It's to deal with the inevitable "visitors in grey velvet" that one frequently acquires upon acquisition of an open food store! What does everyone else think of the idea? Practical or just plain daft [I tend to think it's a bit of overkill]If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0 -
If I had a really big kitchen I would like one.
Would be great for fruit & veg & eggs & bread etc0 -
The very reason I love MSE so much is because threads like this exist to plunge me into the depths of daydream land.
I love talking about pantries and Agas and homemade rugs etc.
I am in the process of making a pantry out of the old shed and coal shed attached to the side of the house, I just need OH to put his tools into the garden shed first! Humf MEN!Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000 -
we don't have a pantry but a very large cellar with a range and a copper water boiling thing so I guess that was the original kitchen - here are 2 deep alcoves with stone shelves for cold storage. I'd love to acquire it for my pantry but dh stores paint and diy stuff there
. I have to make do with a tiny shelf for my bulk overflows though I think then our next diy project is completed I might reclaim some space
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

rachbc - I'd be moving his stuff right about NOW!!! :rotfl::rotfl:
It'd be wonderful. In fact, you might even be able to get the fire working again - just think, "free" cooking & hot water!:j If nothing else, the storage space will SAVE YOU MONEY - try pointing that out to him and see if his eyes light up?!
best of luckIf you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0
