hi guys, i am a uni student living with my girl friend in Coventry, we moved in the apartment on the September 2013, and we have received our first electricity bill after 3 month with is around 900 pounds, we called e-on for help and they were keep me waiting, and non stop sending me new bills, finally they get someone here and fit me a check meter. They came to remove the check meter a week ago, and i have been told we use more than 3000 unit of electricity in 3 months, which is impossible for two student in a apartment, we never use the heater and we got no tumble dryers. E-on update my bills which is around 3000 pounds in total for 10 months in this apartment, we try to talk to our letting agents but they said this problem is not the land lord's responsibility, after that i get back to E-on and they said not their responsibility too, i don't know what to do now, the only thing i sure is We didn't use that much electricity, so i am not gonna pay that bill until the prices is resonable , anyone can give me any suggestion what to do ?? LOTS OF THANKS

Meters rarely fail, and 2 meters to both be wrong is unlikely in the extreme. There may be something you're unaware of in the property draining your meter; it could even be the neighbours tapping into your supply. Have you tested all appliances individually?
None of this alters the fact that the electricity has been used, and you're responsible for paying it.0 -
Afternoon cckevin117 and welcome to the forums
As I understand from your post you've already had a check meter installed and that's said your meter isn't faulty? Is that correct?
When you moved in did you contact us to let us know, with your start meter reads? Have we used these reads to produce your bill from? Have we used accurate reads to bill you up too?
What type of meter do you have and are you on the correct tariff for your meter? This then links in to the type of heating you have, storage heaters. Or gas etc.
To be honest, as you've already had the check meter I would advise you to follow the complaints procedure as you're unhappy with the outcome so far. I don't recommend you to just not pay the bill and do nothing, we need to raise a complaint and escalate as appropriate. The procedure is on the website, if that helps a little.
There does appear to be something wrong somewhere and we need to get to the bottom of it with you.
As you're unhappy, we can't just say it's not our problem. We have to follow this through property.
I do advise you to contact us again.
I really hope things get sorted out quickly for you.

We need much more information than you are giving. To say it is impossible for somebody to use any amount of energy is fairly silly, how does anybody know what you are doing?
What type of heating do you have?
Where does your hot water come from?
Do you have an electric shower?
How often are you in/out?
Have you done basic checks, such as turning off all you have and checking if the meter is still registering a draw?
What appliances do you have? (list them)
How often are they on?
How old/new are they?
Maybe we can start to track down the cause!
Did you submit an opening read when you moved in?
What tariff are you on, single rate/E7/E10?
Unfortunately, unless somebody is tapping off your supply, you will likely be liable for the bill.0 -

Thanks for the reply's.
If you could possibly answer a few of the questions myself and lstar337 have posted, we could try and help a bit more and understand what's happening. Or at least maybe have a bit more advice to give you.
Things like meter reads, metering set up, tariff etc.
Thanks

might be a daft suggestion, but do you have an electric dial meter with 6 rotating dials? These are constantly misread, get the first dial wrong and you` re 10,000 kwhrs down. Also an eco 7 meter with transposed day/night reads, very common, and the suppliers try and bill for their mistakes over the years0
-
If you have a dial meter then it should be turning pretty quickly. If so turn off everything at the mains box.
Turn on circuits individually watching the dial until you see the dial start to turn quickly and note which circuit this is.
Turn off everything on that circuit and check that the dial is turning slowly/not moving.
Turn on the items on that circuit one at a time until the dial sturns quickly again.
The last thing you turned on will probably be the issue.0
