Hi
Got a bit of an issue in my bathroom, have been in my new place for a few months now and whilst me and the wife are quite careful and ensure we wipe up any water around the edges, I am noticing that the sealant around the bath is wearing out quickly looking quite similar to the picture at this link below which I found on the internet:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p-WTsj6n62A/SiwhItYEcxI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/NCJmPb5vYmk/s1600/mildew_tiles.jpg
I want to reseal it but dont know how to do this.
I am a complete newbie and have some questions, would I be right in thinking that I would need to remove all the old sealent first, then give it a good clean with a bit of white spirit and then reseal.
How long does it need to be left for once I have resealed it?
Is it as easy as this or have I missed out some fundamental steps?
I was going to buy a sealant with the gun attachment, is this all I need? Something like this: http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/lt8TtoIVDt0/maxresdefault.jpg
Any advice on this would be most appreciated.
Thanks

The criticality is ensuring that all of the old stuff is removed. Don't use 'mastic remover' as its rubbish. Use a stanley knife and razor blade. It will take a while to get it all off, but worth putting the effort in. DO NOT clean it with white spirit as this is an oil based product and leaves a residue so affects adhesion. Clean it with methylated spirit as this evaporates off completely.
Once is ready for resealing, Fill the bath with water and take your trousers off. Get in the bath. Using your mastic gun and a silicon mastic with an anti bacterial additive, squeeze a bead along the bath edge.witha. Spray bottle of water and washing up liquid, spray all over the mastic. With a Magnum ice lolly stick, pull the round end over the silicone, starting in the corners.
Leave over night before emptying the bath.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
If your bath sealant is similar to the bath you have pictured it may be possible to clean it up.
What you are seeing is less the sealant "wearing out" and more it getting mouldy from continual exposure to moisture.
HG Mould Spray or another similar product may get rid of all or most of the black mould and leave it looking acceptable.
Robert Dyas and other shops stock HG and other suitable sprays. I have found HG to be better than most but any decent mould spray should work.
Try eBay or Amazon if you don't have a local stockist.
If it doesn't work or you still find the sealant looks unacceptable then replace it following the advice above.
If you do replace the sealant, buy a good quality one with anti mould/fungicide. Dow Corning products are good. About £7 for a standard size tube. Don't buy a cheap product.0 -
+1 for HG (Hagesan) mould spray.
If you do replace the silicone completely, I can recommend a silicone remover tool for speed.

I had to do mine last month. I you tubed how to re silicone around a bath. There was a lady on the clip I found. She gave some good advice. I used a bit of WD40 to smear on the silicone then used a Stanley knife to remove old silicone. Once done wash this down with washing up liquid and white spirit and thoroughly dry Before you resilicone fill bath with water. Then reseal with new silicone the one recommended above was the one I used with a sealant gun. Use your finger with a smidge of washing up liquid again to smooth the new silicone when wet. Have a look on you tube. I followed her tips and it was easy ..0
