if there's any sort of billing dispute they could remotely disconnect you. Because such disconnections will be so easy they are likely to become common - disconnect now, ask questions later, sort of thing.
A little far fetched don't you think? Mind you, the way Scottish Power and Npower are acting at the moment......0 -

Fluoridation was going to cause all our children to die. North sea instead of town gas was going to poison everyone within a month and mobiles were going to fry our brain within a year and I've had one for nigh on 30 years without any cerebral combustion. GOV and all telecoms already know all about you and google is going to sell your soul and eat your grandchildren next Friday afternoon about 2pm.
Nutters are going to lobby and frighten, and sensible rational people are going to do nothing at all and don't care about smart's either way.
The mini army of vocal protesters wearing tinfoil hats and hysteria lined stab vests are flying in and out of forums in black helicopters with unprovable claims goes on day to day, as do the conspiracy theories, mind control and voodoo accusations lobbied at smart meters. Extreme, xenophobic paranoid individuals full of pseudo-science will endeavour to make all negative claims short of alien abduction, well, maybe even including alien abduction is being caused by smart meters. That's the natures of the tin foil brigade, terrified of surveillance and eager to exploit the potential for paranoia these individuals will be claiming that scary smarts cause shape-changing reptiles, weaponised viruses, and micro-nuclear weapons able to vaporise every householder in the UK if they ever open their meter cupboard.

Personally I like mine.
It has a nice display which shows me how much I have spent so far each day (and a lot more).
Of course nothing I could not work out but the convenience of having a nice display in £ and p which knows my tariff makes things a lot easier to keep an eye on.
As far as remote disconnect goes. Maybe some suppliers install such meters but mine still has the normal fuse in. Mine is non smets though as far as I know. We were also told they might use the same meter for standard and prepay but again I have not seen a meter that supports remote changing here either.
Simple truth is I think the companies want to install them less than some of the rabid haters of the technology! They are just carrying out orders as it were!
However it's useful to me. And surely that's the point.
Of course it currently means a change of supplier would likely need a change of meter to enable smart again given all the different types.
However I do wonder if the compliance side of the need to change would be met by having a dumb smart meter! i.e. they have to fit such a meter but do they have to actually use it! Is having it there enough for compliance on that level.
Anyway I am typing far too much on a dull subject again, so I will stop!0 -

They really got here fast, must have tuned their foil hats to sniff out mentions of smart meters on MSE.0 -
Was going to say something similar, but since they were all over this thread like stink on a warthog I considered it a lost cause.

I've got a great idea for you and Richie; move to NPower then get a smart meter.0 -
