so im confused as to how id get my credit details without telling them where i lived and giving them a chance to come take everything in the house??

You cannot see what is on your credit files without risking the possibility that your creditor(s) will start chasing you.

Nobody will come and take everything from your house.
If your creditor did take court action against you and obtained a CCJ then it is possible that they could instruct bailiffs but these bailiffs would have no right to break in to your house and no right to take 'everything'. Even if bailiffs have been instructed you do not need to open the door to them and should be able to agree a repayment plan, or possibly even go back to court to suspend the bailiffs warrant.

If the creditor has not taken court action against you then bailiffs cannot be instructed.

You can find out if a CCJ has been granted against you in the last 6years without alerting anyone to your current address. That is by using the registry trust website - which costs £8 per name/address you search. But this wouldn't tell you if the creditor had taken court action more than 6years ago.

Yes you could refuse permission for them to search your credit file.

Although that said I am not sure why people would feel the need to. As you say they are obliged to supply to property regardless of what is on the occupier's credit file.

I guess it may limit the payment options they will offer to the occupier, but then so could refusing that permission.

I suppose it cuts down on the number of nosey parkers looking at your finances, and reduces the number of searches.

On the subject of the water (sorry OP, this thread has been hijacked a bit), I think if you're not metered you're not getting any sort of credit. Billing period is 1 April to 31 March with first bill due immediately, so arguably there's no credit involved. So why, I wonder should there even be reporting to the CRAs, let alone snooping?
