Popping noise in walls

Sorry if posted in wring area? Not sure where to post?
Can anyone help identify this issue?
Recently bought old house, 1928 ex council semi. South west facing.
Very loud popping/snapping noise coming from inside wall in front bedroom at height above dado rail across whole of wall in random places. Also now cracking noises in walls below window. Mainly happens when it’s heating up, and much worse when direct sunlight on front of house, 7-12 noon. Pops when cooling down and sometimes through the night now too. :(
· No visible cracks anywhere (to worry about).
· Guttering has been checked and is ok.
· Some historical rising/penetrating damp which is being sorted.
· House needs lots of repointing which is planned. Some holes which may have let water in?
· Surveyor advised to have wall ties checked as black ash mortor used. Could it be the ties that have gone and are expanding and contracting?

Any ideas? Thanks.

If I'm stating the obvious, please ignore, but the guttering will be expanding and contracting with the large variations in temperature and it's very common for cracking noises to be generated at the brackets.

A bit of something like WD40 on those might cure it, but get a ladder up there first on a sunny day to check first if this is the cause.

I think you are spot on Dave. Used to have that with my gutters.

Have you got plastic windows?, they are usually the main culprits.

I doubt you would hear any noise if it was brick ties, once they rot there is no contact so no noise.

The clincher may be listening from outside, gutters or windows will both be in hearing range at the same time.
Sounds like a good excuse to lay back in the garden with a "jug" or two this evening. ;);)

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

    thanks for replies.

We've sat outside and the noise can be heard, but not from the gutter, which is quiet, it is coming from inside the walls all across the front of the house. It is much worse when direct sunlight is shining on it but aslo when coling down at night.

Any ideas much appreciated as its a bit worrying! Who should I get in to have a look?
    Thanks.

    Nothing else to offer really.
Are the walls papered, you really need to expose the plaster under that window, (the reason I suggested window expansion).

Although gutters are often suspect as suggested, if you can't here them from outside then that explanation is doubtful.

I'd give it a little more time before you go any further other than what I've suggested.

Walls have 5 layers of paper! Have taken some off under window and plaster is ok. Small leak coming through lintel when it rains - seen tiny wet patch on floorboards. Am getting some repointing done in few weeks, so this may help if this is cause?

Will monitor and see if builder can figure out what it is!

    Thanks for all advice.
