Main dealer service or not?

My 4 year old Skoda Yeti 1.2TSi has just sailed through it's MOT at Mr Clutch and now needs a service. Wasn't expecting it so soon as it's on the interval servicing and the last one was only a year ago. I only do 5K miles a year. Not sure whether to try and get a cheaper service, Skoda have quoted £266 but worried there might be any software updates. Can anyone please advise? Many thanks.

    Why are you surprised?

The service intervals are 12 months for the oil change and the bigger inspection service at 24 months.

If the last one was year ago, and it's 4 year old, then both the Inspection service and an oil-change are due now.

£266 seems fair enough to me.
  • I'm surprised because it was 18 months before the service indicator came on the last time as it is set for variable servicing as opposed to fixed.
Would an independent garage be able to do any software updates if there any and reset the service interval display?

Why would you need software updates? I'd be very surprised if any garage did software updates as part of a service.

I'd go independent. It'll be cheaper and the garage will actually do the work they've quoted you for.

Varies depending on how its driven and how many miles you do. A year is perfectly normal. They wouldn't be able to do software updates but should be able to reset the display. Unless you find a VAG/skoda independent specialist, they should be able to do software updates.

This particular model was one where the dealer would have quietly done the necessary software update (they needed it!) without alerting the owner to a perceived fault. As it's a Skoda and not a Roller, Main Dealer Servicing in the book isn't going to enhance its value. Find a local, recommended garage and let them take care of it.

I suspect it may have been set back to time/distance at the last service in error - particularly as you did 18 months previously? You may have paid extra for the long-life oil, which isn't needed for annual servicing. As above, dealers will do software updates if thy are due - not necessarily because there's a fault - you've learned something today Shielder!!
  • Shielder, it states Vehicle and software enhancements according to Skoda database on the list of what's included on the major service.

That's what I was wondering. The first service was after 20 months then the next was actually 15 months.
Another thing I'm confused about is the service schedule says the brake fluid should be changed after 3 years then every 2 but looks like they changed it on the first service! Must ask them why unless anyone here can tell me?

Brake fluid change is an advisory.......I have never had it done and have kept some cars for many years.

At present I have an 8 year old Nissan and an 11 year old Suzuki and neither has had a brake fluid change.
